Softscaping
Breathe Life Into Your Garden

Overview

While hardscaping forms the structural foundation of a garden, it's the softscaping that breathes life, colour, and soul into your outdoor space. At DG. Gardens, we excel in the art and science of softscape design — curating sophisticated plant palettes that thrive in Brisbane's subtropical climate while creating the lush, layered landscapes that define our signature aesthetic. From architectural feature trees and tropical groundcovers to manicured hedges and seasonal colour, every plant we select has a purpose.

Bespoke Planting Design

Our planting designs are developed by qualified horticulturalists who understand both the aesthetic and horticultural requirements of each plant species. We create layered planting schemes that combine canopy trees, mid-storey shrubs, groundcovers, and feature plants to create depth, texture, and year-round interest. Every planting plan is tailored to your site's specific conditions — soil type, aspect, rainfall, and the architectural character of your home.

Subtropical Plant Expertise

Brisbane's subtropical climate supports an extraordinary range of plant species — from dramatic tropical palms and gingers to delicate ferns and bromeliads. Our team has deep knowledge of the plants that thrive in South East Queensland, including their water requirements, growth habits, and seasonal characteristics. We source premium quality specimens from specialist nurseries, ensuring that every plant we install is healthy, well-established, and ready to perform.

Lawn Installation & Turf

A premium lawn is the foundation of many Brisbane gardens. We install a range of turf varieties suited to Brisbane's conditions — from the fine-bladed Sir Walter Buffalo for shaded areas to Zoysia and Kikuyu for high-traffic lawns. We prepare the soil thoroughly, install quality turf, and establish an irrigation schedule to ensure your lawn establishes quickly and performs beautifully.

FAQ

Common Questions

What plants work best in Brisbane's subtropical climate?

Brisbane's subtropical climate supports a wide range of plants. For structure and privacy, we love Lilly Pilly, Ficus, and Bamboo. For tropical drama, Bangalow Palms, Heliconias, and Gingers are exceptional. For low-maintenance groundcovers, Mondo Grass, Liriope, and native grasses perform beautifully. We always select plants that are well-suited to your specific site conditions — aspect, soil type, and water availability.

How long does it take for a new garden to establish in Brisbane?

In Brisbane's warm climate, most gardens establish relatively quickly. Groundcovers and shrubs typically establish within 3–6 months. Feature trees and hedges may take 12–24 months to reach their intended size. We install plants at sizes that provide immediate impact while allowing for healthy establishment. We also provide a 12-month plant replacement warranty on all plants we install.

Do you install irrigation systems with your planting?

Yes. We strongly recommend installing an irrigation system with any new planting, particularly in Brisbane's dry season (June–September). We design and install drip irrigation systems that deliver water directly to the root zone of each plant, minimising water waste and ensuring consistent moisture levels. All our irrigation systems are connected to a smart controller that adjusts watering schedules based on weather conditions.
